Yuri Shimmyo is a painter and printmaker, born in Japan and living and working in Sydney.
She first fell in love with oil painting when she was about 5, watching her grandfather paint. She studied at Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney during 1996-2000 and since 2016, she’s been learning and practising printmaking at Meadowbank TAFE.She mainly uses oils for painting and linocut and etching in printmaking.
Her work is usually about people/objects that catch her eye in everyday life and quite often, places them in a slightly unusual setting. It could be people stuck in a maze, weeds growing beside the road, or a piece of fruit that appears to have developed its own character.

She was a Finalist in the 2020 Archbald Portrait Prize, finalist in 2019 Hunters Hill, Waverley and Hornsby Art Prizes and winner in 2019 TAFE NSW Art Prize (works on paper).
