Fujima Kanmasen Nihon Buyo Studio is a Japanese traditional dance (Nihon Buyo) studio based in Vaucluse, Sydney, dedicated to preserving and sharing the beauty of Japanese performing arts and culture in Australia.
The studio is directed by Naoko Komine (stage name Fujima Kanmasen).
Naoko began studying Nihon Buyo in Sydney in 2000 under Chin Kam Yoke (Fujima Senyou). To further her training, she later moved to Tokyo and became a student of Fujima Kanashima of the Fujima School in 2005. Fujima Kanashima was a student of Kanjuro Fujima VI, who was recognised as a Person of Cultural Merit in 1979 and awarded the Order of Culture in 1982.
In 2007, Naoko was granted the professional stage name Fujima Kanmasen by Kanjuro Fujima VIII, Headmaster of the Fujima School. In 2009, she received her teaching certification as a Shihan Natori.
Today, Naoko teaches Nihon Buyo in Sydney, sharing not only the art of traditional Japanese dance but also the culture, etiquette, aesthetics, and philosophy that surround it.
Lessons are conducted in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and are open to both Japanese and non-Japanese students of all ages and experience levels.
Inspired by the way she was taught in Japan, Kanmasen introduces students not only to dance techniques, but also to kimono dressing, traditional movement, manners, and the cultural traditions that have been passed down through generations. Her aim is to recreate the warm and generous learning environment she experienced with her teacher, where Japanese culture was shared naturally through everyday practice.
In addition to teaching, Naoko writes a bilingual publication on Substack, where she explores Japanese culture through the perspectives of Nihon Buyo and kimono. Her articles introduce readers to the history, craftsmanship, aesthetics, and people who have preserved these traditions, helping make Japanese culture more accessible to an international audience.
Her hope is to preserve and pass on the knowledge, traditions, and spirit that her teacher generously shared with her, ensuring that these cultural treasures continue to be appreciated by future generations.
Beginners are warmly welcome, and trial lessons are available. The studio welcomes anyone interested in discovering the beauty, elegance, and rich cultural heritage of Japan through Nihon Buyo.
