Masayo Colley is a sumie and visual artist with a rich background in graphic design, having earned her Bachelor’s degree in Japan and Master’s degree from UNSW in Australia. With over two decades of experience as a graphic designer since 1998, Masayo draws profound inspiration from Sumie, a traditional Japanese ink painting technique.

Sumie, deeply rooted in Zen philosophy, fuels Masayo’s artistic expression. Her focus lies in capturing the essence of brush stroke movements unique to Sumie, which she believes are irreplaceable by digital means. Despite her proficiency with digital tools as a graphic designer, Masayo continuously strives to convey beauty through the unrestricted expression of free-hand drawing.

“For me, hand drawing amplifies visual messages. Through painting, one can sense the artist’s passion, thoughts, and expressions. I am truly fulfilled when others connect with my artistic expression.”

Masayo ardently shares her passion for sumie worldwide, conducting numerous art classes in Sydney’s high schools. She actively engages in presentations and workshops, educating audiences on the art and philosophy of Sumie. Additionally, Masayo is committed to supporting traditional craftsmen in Japan, combating challenges such as declining apprenticeships and demand for their craft.

Her portfolio includes designing sumi artworks for restaurants and business logos, as well as participating in various exhibitions and workshops across diverse platforms such as high schools, festivals, and cultural events. Notable appearances include presentations at the NSW Japanese Teachers’ Conference and exhibitions at prominent venues like Japan Expo and Japanese restaurants.

Masayo’s dedication extends to fostering a deeper appreciation for Sumie worldwide while preserving its cultural significance and supporting artisans in Japan.
