Metal & Textiles Artist

Contact Izumi Montgomery
Izumi Montgomery is a Japanese artist and creative workshop facilitator based in Sydney. She completed her MFA in Sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts and later studied fashion at TAFE NSW.
With a background in working with metal and textiles, she now works across a wide range of materials, often using old, reclaimed and repurposed objects and fabrics. Drawing on Japanese craft traditions, she explores ways to bring these materials into new forms while retaining traces of their previous lives.
Her practice also extends to creating hands-on experiences where people can explore materials and express their own ideas. Using Japanese craft techniques and upcycled materials, she develops workshops that encourage participants to make individual choices and draw on their own experiences and memories.
Many of her workshops involve jewellery and small wearable or portable objects. She sees these creations as a small “moving exhibition”: pieces that travel with their makers, carrying the creative experience into everyday life.
Based in Australia since 2011, her approach has been shaped by its multicultural communities. She considers the experience of making and sharing creativity an integral part of her art practice, exploring elements of socially engaged art and creative experience design. She facilitates workshops at Reverse Garbage, with local councils and at other venues across Sydney.
